In isolation and Celebration

Five weeks in lockdown so far, I resigned myself to accepting the status quo and staying in my bubble, but that didn’t mean I was stoical throughout.  I had many moments where my mind scampered off helplessly, longing to be elsewhere, flipping between tantalising selections of delicious foods, outdoor jaunts and exotic destinations etc.  (Note: my daily line of work involved rostered hours, which means that, over time, sleep actually becomes the most desired abstract commodity.)

But my home island, Rotuma, was never far from my mind, so it was an obvious first choice of imaginary destination.  With its remote location, grand open spaces and almost unspoilt nature, as well as its clear sky with glittering stars at night, Rotuma is idyllic.  To be in isolation there would mean another chance to walk down the path of culture, traditions and story telling … a chance to share, relearn the arts, upskill the knowledge and skills I once learned long ago. Significantly important is the power of rest and solace and being there that would restore the equilibrium I need.  That visit was not to be … but however short-lived each “dreamy moment” was, it perpetuated smiles, gave me reasons to look ahead and brightened an otherwise dreary day.

What also helps is looking beyond this virus.  What do we want to accomplish? What’s important for the future?  Given that perspective, my work is cut out for me; I hope you are looking ahead as well.

Until the next time, be kind to one another.
